Southampton gets grant for new senior shuttles
The Town of Southampton is adding two new passenger buses to its Senior Shuttle fleet thanks to a grant from the New York State Department of Transportation.
The new buses will replace two older buses that were recently taken out of service due to high mileage and maintenance costs.
The shuttles are primarily used by the town’s Senior Services Division, which provides various services for local seniors like meals on wheels, transportation to doctors and hospital appointments, shopping and more. The demand for this type of transportation service has seen an increase in recent years.
The grant of $165,046 covers 80% of the cost of both shuttles, which totals $206,307. The town will pay the remaining $41,261.
The Senior Services Transportation Program provides door-to-door pick up transportation with advanced reservations. The program runs from 8:30am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Riders are asked to contribute $3.00 one-way or $4.00 round-trip.
