Southampton makes splash with underwater ribbon-cutting

The Town of Southampton and the Long Island Divers Association on Sunday held an underwater ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed renovation of the Ponquogue Piers.

Formerly the Ponquogue Bridge, the popular diving spot was damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The commemoration was the first underwater ribbon cutting on Long Island, according to the Long Island Divers Association.

The official ribbon cutting on land will take place Friday, Oct. 11 at the South Pier. The underwater ceremony was scheduled separately due to the tides.
