Canine costume contest goes virtual

Barkfest, Nassau County’s annual costume contest for canines, is going virtual this year.

Photo submissions will be accepted online from Oct. 23 to Oct. 30 at nassaucountyny.gov/barkfest.

And this year, something new: Residents will pick the winners. Beginning on Oct. 31, photos of each contestant will be posted on the event’s webpage where people can vote for their favorites from Oct. 31 to Nov. 5, according to a county statement.

The free event is sponsored by the Nassau County SPCA. The first place winner will receive a $150 American Express gift card, second place winner will get a $75 American Express gift card and the third place winner will get a $50 American Express gift card.

“Nassau Barkfest has become an annual Halloween tradition for dog owners across Long Island,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in the statement. “I am thrilled to be able to transform this beloved event to ensure the show could go on this year in a safe and engaging new way. Encouraging all to help us choose the winner and cast their vote beginning on Halloween. Thank you to the Nassau SPCA for its sponsorship.”
