Presidential service dog Sully honored with statue
A life-sized bronze statue of President George H.W. Bush’s former service dog Sully will be unveiled next week.
America’s VetDogs commissioned sculptor Susan Bahary to create the monument on the VetDogs Smithtown campus in recognition of Veterans Day.
The bronze Sully is in a sitting position holding his leash in his mouth, which depicts “retrieve,” a task that America’s VetDogs trains its service dogs to perform for their handlers. The piece shows Sully wearing his official America’s VetDogs service dog vest, which includes the Great Seal of the United States on the back.
The California-based artist Bahary is expected to join Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and America’s VetDogs President and CEO John Miller at the unveiling ceremony at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 371 East Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown.
