Hewlett firefighters rescue lucky dog

A golden retriever named Lucky lived up to its name on Sunday morning after falling into a partially frozen pond at Grant Park in Hewlett.

Police officers from Nassau County’s fourth precinct and members of the Hewlett Fire Department responded to the call around 9 a.m. and saw Lucky struggling to stay afloat in the pond. Rescue swimmers were able to retrieve the dog from the frigid waters shortly after and reunite him with his owner.

Lucky was transported to a local animal hospital to be evaluated and is expected to make a full recovery.

Animal professionals urge caution when bringing dogs out in the snow, especially near frozen bodies of water. Signs to look out for include dark, cracked or slushy ice, as well as partially submerged tree branches indicating the ice is likely dangerous.
