NCC radio station wins top honors in national contest
WHPC 90.3 FM, the Nassau Community College radio station, took top honors at the 2021 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference awards this month, as it was named Best Overall College Radio Station in the nation.
Overall, WHPC earned seven national awards, including Best Community College Radio Station; Best Morning Show; Best Station ID; Best Underwriting Announcement; Best Use of Social Media; and Best College Radio Station Advisor (Shawn Novatt).
“Even with the pandemic forcing all of us to broadcast remotely, we continued to thrive and provide our audience with the information and entertainment they expect from us,” Novatt, WHPC station director, said in a written statement. “WHPC is celebrating nearly 50 years of broadcasting and I am so thrilled that the station continues to receive the recognition it deserves. Our mission is to provide professional broadcasting training to qualified Nassau Community College students, and these awards once again prove we are accomplishing our goal.”
Nassau Community College’s radio station is home to about 120 volunteers, most of whom are NCC students. Its programming includes sports, entertainment and informational shows, including a variety of music shows featuring pop, rock, polka and Italian music. The station can be heard at 90.3 FM and worldwide on iHeartRadio, as well as on Amazon Alexa and Google Home devices.
Other Long Island college radio stations receiving IBS awards were Hofstra University’s WRHU-FM, which earned a Best Newscast award, and Stony Brook University’s WUSB-FM, which garnered the award for Best On-Air Pledge Drive.
