Recycling poster contest for students

Covanta and the Town of Huntington have organized a recycling-themed poster contest for students to celebrate April as Earth Month.

Poster entries must depict a recycling theme such as composting, electronics recycling, or waste to energy conversion and the contest is open to students enrolled in elementary school grades 1 through 8.

Judging will be in two age categories, grades 1 through 4 and grades 5 through 8. First place winners from each age category will receive Lenovo tablets; second place winners will get $75 gift certificates to Barnes & Noble; and third place winners get $50 Barnes & Noble gift certificates.

In addition, gift certificates of $500 each will be awarded to the two schools with the first-place winners.

“We are proud to support the next generation of STEM leaders with fun projects like this one where students can learn the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle,” Maureen Early, Community Relations at Covanta, said. “This also includes educating students about the fourth R – recovery. At Covanta, we recover energy from the waste that cannot be recycled to power homes and businesses right here on Long Island. We wish the best of luck to all of the students entering the contest.”

Pictures of the entries must be received via email to: [email protected] by Monday, May 16.

Winners will be honored by the Town of Huntington and Covanta Huntington at the town board meeting at 7 p.m. on June 14.
