Cardboard boats to make waves in Riverhead
The Riverhead Chamber of Commerce is once again calling all cardboard captains to hit the water for its 12th annual Cardboard Boat Race next month.
The family fun event takes place on Sunday, August 5 at the Peconic Riverfront in downtown Riverhead.
All boats must be made of corrugated cardboard and can be put together with duct tape. The cardboard crafts must be under 33-feet long and can be painted with latex paint.
The event will have four race divisions: Youth Regatta for crew members age 12 and under; Grand National Regatta for crew members over 12;
Yacht Club Regatta for crews of all ages; and the Outlaw Race as a second chance competition.
Besides awards for first, second and third places in each division, there will be special awards for Best Spirit; Titanic Sinking; People’s Choice; Best Constructed (no tubes); Best Captain; Most Creative; and Commander’s Choice.
There is a $25 entry fee per boat and a $10 fee for each additional crew member. Rain date is Sunday, August 12.
