78th annual Shinnecock Powwow highlights Native American tradition
The Shinnecock Nation is once again hosting a celebration of its culture and heritage at one of the East End’s most anticipated summer events.
The 78th annual Shinnecock Powwow runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, August 30 through Monday, Sept. 2 at 1 West Church St. in Southampton.
The Powwow will feature live music and drumming with the sounds of native drumming and singing as renowned drum groups gather to provide the event’s rhythmic heartbeat. There will also be traditional dance competitions with dancers from across North America competing in several categories, including traditional, fancy, grass and jingle dances.
An artisan marketplace offering authentic Indigenous arts and crafts, intricate beadwork and colorful pottery will be a powwow highlight. In addition, attendees can sample traditional Native American foods like fry bread, corn soup and fresh seafood. The event also includes many cultural exhibits and storytelling sessions.
