Long Island Cares opens new Valley Stream food pantry
The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank opened its newest food pantry in Valley Stream on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Local officials joined executives from the nonprofit for a ribbon cutting ceremony coinciding with Hunger Action Day, a day where food banks across the country focus their collective efforts for a greater impact in the fight against food insecurity.
The new West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support, located at 241 Rockaway Avenue, is open Monday through Friday. Tuesdays are designated “Military Appreciation Tuesdays” and the pantry is open only to veterans and service members.
“Opening the West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support is an extension of Long Island Cares that aims to provide immediate and ongoing relief to those suffering from food insecurity in Valley Stream and neighboring Nassau towns,” said Jessica Rosati, vice president for Programs and Community Services, in a statement.
The Valley Stream center is Long Island Cares’ ninth location according to Paule Pachter, president and CEO of Long Island Cares.
“We look forward to working with both the local business community and government to respond to the populations’ needs, as we’ve been doing in Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Hampton Bays, Hauppauge and Bethpage,” said Pachter.
