AHRC Suffolk celebrates participants’ creativity at annual art show
More than a dozen program participants from AHRC Suffolk, a nonprofit that provides services to people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, gathered to cut a ceremonial ribbon on its Annual Art Show on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
The one-day show, which took place at the historic Meadow Edge Greenhouse on the grounds of the West Sayville Golf Course in West Sayville, was held with the help of the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The exhibit included painting on canvas, miniature clay sculptures and 3D mixed materials pieces, the winners of which were arranged for display among the plants inside the greenhouse.
“Being a judge was an amazing experience,” said Brian Cabezas, chief program officer, AHRC Suffolk. “The talent that is on display here today is just extraordinary. Kudos to the people we support and they’re wonderful, amazing abilities.”
All proceeds from the art show’s plant and pumpkin sale benefitted the AHRC Suffolk Greenhouse Horticultural Program.
“This show and the pumpkin sale help us continue to deliver services to our participants who rely on us for educational, vocational, residential and employment services,” said Mary Fu, chief advancement officer, AHRC Suffolk. “Maintaining and operating the greenhouse as both a community amenity and a living classroom is something that benefits our participants tremendously and opens doors to them for the future.”
The winning artists will have their work converted into greeting card favors featuring a note about themselves, to be distributed to guests at AHRC Suffolk’s Annual Candlelight Ball, their largest fundraiser of the year, on Wednesday, October 23 at Stonebridge Country Club in Hauppauge.
