High school football teams kick off Supermarket Food Drive

Football teams from four Long Island high schools are participating in the third annual Supermarket Food Drive.

The teams from Harborfields High School, Huntington High School and John Glenn High School kick off the event on Sunday, Oct. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at three area supermarkets.

The Harborfields Tornadoes football team will collect food at Greenlawn Farms at 777 Pulaski Road in Greenlawn; the Huntington Blue Devils football team will collect food at Stop & Shop at 60 Wall St. in Huntington; and the John Glenn Knights football team will man the collection at Stop & Shop at 3126 Jericho Turnpike in East Northport.

On Sunday, Nov. 10 from noon to 4 p.m., the Northport Tigers football team will be collecting food at Stop & Shop at 454 Fort Salonga Road in Northport.

The Supermarket Food Drive is organized by Huntington Town Councilman Sal Ferro and the town’s Director of Minority Affairs Kevin Thorbourne.

“The Supermarket Food Drive embodies the strength of our community spirit,” Ferro said in a written statement. “I’m proud of our local high school football teams for their commitment to supporting those in need within our community. This event showcases the unity and compassion that define our town.”

People are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items during the two-day drive to help make a positive impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity in the Huntington area.
