The officials recognized 28-year-old Kayla Masotto of Mastic Beach, who saved a man that fell through the ice on the Poospatuck Creek in Mastic.

Masotto heard a commotion behind her home at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, after the man fell through the ice and was struggling in the creek. She grabbed a paddleboard and headed out onto the icy creek.

Risking her own safety, Masotta was able to paddle out to the victim and pull him onto her paddleboard. They were thrown a rope from three good samaritans, Joseph Wahl, Tony Orsi and Alyssa Treadwell, who pulled them safely to the shore.
