Winning license plate features iconic Long Island landmark

The results are in.

The new design for New York State license plates will include the iconic Montauk Lighthouse on the far right side in addition to Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, the Adirondacks and Niagara Falls. The state motto “Excelsior” is also spelled out along the bottom of the plate.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles last month came up with five different plate designs and asked New Yorkers to vote for their favorite one, with the winning art adorning the official state license plate for the upcoming decade.

Of the five choices — three simply with Lady Liberty and one of the new Mario Cuomo Bridge — only one design had something for all of the nearly 20 million residents living throughout New York’s 62 counties, so the plate’s popularity in the poll makes sense.

The new plates will be rolled out in April as drivers renew their registration. Motorists with license plates that are more than 10 years old will be issued the new ‘Excelsior’ plates. However, a $25 replacement fee will be added to the cost of renewal, and drivers can keep their current plate number for an additional $20 fee.

And as always, the DMV offers more than 200 different plate styles, including several that benefit causes like the Environmental Protection Fund and the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Fund.
