Annual Arbor Day art contest asks for student designs

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has begun accepting submissions for its annual Arbor Day poster contests.

The DEC’s Urban and Community Forestry program offers two artwork contests: one for all members of the public and one specifically for fifth-grade students. The state provides educational resources for teachers to encourage class participation as well.

Students are asked to design a poster depicting this year’s contest theme — Trees Feed New York — promoting the importance of trees and their contribution to the environment.

The winning artists will be honored at the annual Arbor Day celebration in Albany, with their artwork being used for the 2020 State Arbor Day Poster. Last year, the state printed more than 200,000 of the posters for schools, libraries, local businesses and environmental organizations.

The contest is open to all students enrolled in fifth grade. Posters must be submitted to the Stony Brook DEC regional office by Dec. 20.
