Sophie Flay scores a victory at Belmont
A horse owned by Sophie Flay, daughter of Food Network chef and restaurateur Bobby Flay, won a race at Belmont Park on Friday.
Under jockey Javier Castellano, Sophie Flay’s horse Coffee Crush outran five others to reach the finish line of the mile-long grass track in just under 93 seconds, winning a prize purse of $77,000. It is the second victory for Flay’s mocha-monikered filly — the first win also came in New York at Aqueduct Racetrack on Dec. 3, 2017. Coffee Crush is trained by Jimmy Toner, who at age 19 became the youngest trainer to win a thoroughbred race in New York in 1960.
Sophie Flay is a community journalist for ABC 7 in Los Angeles and also hosts The Flay List on Food Network, where she and her father dine out together at some of their favorite New York restaurants.
Bobby Flay, a longtime horse racing enthusiast, has had several victories at Belmont, including Grade I winners Dame Dorothy and Her Smile, according to Thoroughbred Daily News. The Iron Chef also teamed up with WinStar Farm to win the 2016 Belmont Stakes with the dapple gray colt Creator.
