Main Street goes pink for breast cancer awareness
Northwell Health is helping business owners on Long Island’s south shore turn their storefronts pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
For the health system’s first Pink by the Bay event, storefronts on Main Street from Babylon to East Islip will “go pink” to promote breast cancer awareness. Northwell provided store owners with free decorating kits that include pink lights, window chalk, a pink bow and a Pink by the Bay window sticker.
On Tuesday, Oct. 1, executives from Northwell will join Town of Babylon officials and members of the Islip Town Board to ignite the inaugural campaign, with pink LED lights radiating from both town hall buildings in Islip and Babylon.
More than 250 businesses are participating in the event to support survivors of breast cancer and benefit organizations in the community. Students from Islip High School also pitched in to place pink bows on stretches of the metal fence facing Main Street near the school.
Northwell, which is Long Island’s largest private employer, plans to make the campaign an annual event going forward.
