Recycling company contributes to campaign against drunk driving

If you drive on Long Island enough, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the public awareness campaigns about drunk driving, often featuring mangled vehicles to illustrate the dangers of driving while impaired. But have you ever wondered where those cars actually come from? 

A Medford-based recycling company is helping out with that. 

Gershow Recycling donated a wrecked vehicle to the Town of Huntington for the town’s campaign against drunk and distracted driving. The program serves to remind residents of the consequences of driving while impaired or distracted, especially during the holidays when more motorists are on the road.

The car is on display at the corner of Park Avenue and Pulaski Road in front of Fair Meadow Park. Gershow has donated cars for similar purposes across Long Island, including to Sayville High School’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter.

In addition to the public awareness campaigns, Gershow has found other creative ways to use scrapped vehicles before they are shredded and recycled. Earlier this year, the company donated 30 cars for the 12th annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament at the Northport Fire Department’s training grounds.

The company has also provided free aluminum scrap to several of Long Island’s high school robotics teams for the Regional FIRST Robotics Competition.
