Stop & Shop donates five tons to Long Beach seniors

Long Island Cares received a donation of fresh produce from Stop & Shop weighing more than 10,000 pounds last week, the grocery chain announced Monday.

The fruits and vegetables were distributed to seniors at more than 30 sites across the Island, including residents of apartments operated by the Long Beach Housing Authority, which manages four senior and adult-disabled rental complexes in Long Beach.

The donation included more than a dozen different fruits and veggies to supplement the meal packages of nonperishable food provided by Long Island Cares, which contain nine meals for a three-day supply.

“We are extremely grateful to our corporate partners at Stop & Shop who are stepping forward to assist our seniors,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, chief program officer for Long Island Cares. “Stop & Shop’s generosity will allow Long Island Cares to provide 10,000 pounds of additional fresh produce to seniors in need.”
