The Jericho building that now houses One North restaurant, formerly the site of the Maine Maid Inn, was originally built in 1789 as the home for prominent Quaker and abolitionist Valentine Hicks. It had a removable panel behind an upstairs linen closet that concealed a staircase to the attic where Hicks hid runaway slaves as part of the Underground Railroad.
