Drive-ins turning empty parking lots into money makers

Though most of its stores are closed, the Smith Haven Mall has found a way to make money from some of its parking spaces.

Mall owner Simon Properties has partnered with Bay Shore-based event producer Starfish Junction to create a pop-up drive-in movie series at its Lake Grove mall.

Called Movie Lot Drive-In, the concept includes erecting a 52-foot screen in the Smith Haven Mall parking lot and charging $40 per vehicle for the movie series that kicks off with “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark” at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 28.

Among the full-length feature films on the drive-in schedule so far are “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “King Kong,” “The Bad News Bears,” and “Star Wars: The Ride of Skywalker.”

Ticket holders can bring their own food and snacks though they can also patronize the mall’s restaurants for curbside pick up before taking their parking spot for the movie. Portable restrooms will be available and the showings will take place rain or shine.
