Town gives $8M in grants to four Long Island colleges

The Town of Hempstead presented Hofstra University, Molloy College, Adelphi University and Nassau Community College each with a $2 million grant to help ease financial burdens caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The money, which was part of the town’s $133 million in funding from the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Act, will help the schools purchase the required personal protective equipment needed for reopening to students and faculty, according to a town statement.

From the start of the pandemic, the four colleges have been working to design a reopening plan that would allow students and staff to return to their respective campuses as safely as possible.

“I’d like to thank Senator Schumer for his continued advocacy for financial support on a local level,” Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin said in the statement. “The CARES Act funding has allowed us to help ease the burdens on thousands of residents throughout the town. The financial assistance being provided to these local colleges and universities within our community will enable them to maintain the necessary level of safety for students and staff as they look to bring students back to the classroom.”
