Habitat for Humanity starts East Patchogue renovation project
Habitat For Humanity of Suffolk has begun an extensive renovation project at a home in East Patchogue.
The house will be the new home for Nickesha Medley and her daughter Shania, who currently live in an attic apartment in Valley Stream.
Joining the renovation project this week are student volunteers from Xavier High School, who were being guided by Habitat’s construction staff.
As part of Habitat Suffolk’s Home Ownership program, Medley will complete 300 hours of volunteer time building her future home and homes for other members. In addition, she will perform community service and learn about financial preparation and home maintenance.
Island Outreach Foundation, a Habitat For Humanity partner, is sponsoring the home renovations.
“We’re ready to start our new life together,” Medley said in a written statement. “I look forward to owning a safe and affordable home to spend more time with my daughter and to give her the stability to excel in school and further her education. We are overjoyed to be partnering with Habitat Suffolk.”
Habitat Suffolk CEO Lee Silberman said the East Patchogue project is the start of another successful homeownership story.
“Our mission is to strengthen communities by providing quality, affordable homes and we took another step in achieving that mission for the Medley family today,” Silberman said in the statement.
