Music By and For Students seeks young composers

The Long Island Composers Alliance is once again seeking students to compete in its annual contest and concert.

The annual contest, “Music By and For Students,” is open to all students from elementary through high school. Each musical composition entered should be less than 10 minutes and written for solos, duos, trios, quartets,  but not to exceed 12 musicians.

The contest offers $100 cash prizes for outstanding student compositions.

This year, the winning compositions may be presented at a showcase being planned at Hofstra University. Prizewinners will also have their performance videotaped and uploaded to YouTube and the LICA Facebook page.

Recordings of the music should be accompanied by a pdf of the scores and those submissions are due by May 26. The $10 application fee can be paid by clicking on the “Donate” button on the LICA website at www.LICAmusic.org, where there is more information about the contest.

Since 1973, this annual celebration of young composers and performers has become one of LICA’s most popular events. “Music By and For Students” has become the model for state-wide NYSSMA student composition programs.
