Volunteers sought for harbor cleanup event in Oyster Bay
Volunteers are invited to the Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup and Marine Education Expo on Saturday, April 13.
The cleanup and expo will be held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
The free event, which is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Bay, offers everyone an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter from the shoreline, and to participate in a day of learning featuring environmentalists and marine educators offering information on local wildlife, animal encounters, a marine vessel restoration project and boat yard tour, ecosystem restoration project exhibits, and family fun activities.
Applications for $20,000 grants will be available to homeowners and small businesses looking to upgrade their septic system to new clean water systems.
In years past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted in 40,000 pounds of debris being collected by volunteers and town workers.
The meeting place for this year’s cleanup effort will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the cleanup include Stehli Beach and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Certificates are available upon request for students seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements.
