Islip Art Council to host first-ever ‘Art for Paws’ pet art exhibit

Pet artists from American Pet Professionals and the Islip Arts Council are joining together to showcase their work in the first ever ‘Art for Paws’ exhibit.

The unique exhibit runs from Tuesday, May 7 through Thursday, May 30 at the Islip Art Council’s space in the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore.

An opening reception will be held there on Friday, May 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., celebrating adopted pets and bringing attention to pets in local animal shelters that are in need of homes.

Nancy E. Hassel, president and founder of American Pet Professionals, said she had dreamed of organizing a pet art exhibit for over 20 years, and decided to hold the event at Islip Art Council after taking a watercolor class there last year.

In a statement, Hassel was grateful her idea was so well-received. “Everyone at the Islip Art Council are pet lovers and pet parents, and they jumped on board with the idea,” she said. “I am so pleased to be working with them for this event.”

Pet lovers at Islip Arts Council are just as happy to be hosting the exhibit. “Anyone who knows me, knows that my dogs have always been my family,” stated Lynda Moran, executive director of Islip Arts Council. “Never without a dog in the house, sometimes with three, I am thrilled that we are finally having a pet ‘family’ exhibit at the gallery.”
