Giant fish at Jamesport beach is fed with recyclables
The giant fish receptacle at Iron Pier beach in Jamesport got emptied for the first time this week.
The four-by-six foot wire fish has been filling up with recyclable containers that are fed to it by beachgoers. Since it was installed last fall, people have been disposing of their bottles and cans in the fish, helping to keep the beach clean.
Inspired by similar fish receptacles keeping beaches clean in India and Bali, the Iron Pier fish was designed and created by Clayton Orehek, a glass artist and sculptor.
The Town of Riverhead Litter Committee received a grant from National Grid to create the unique receptacle and hope beachgoers will continue to feed it throughout the year.
