A new initiative aims to help protect the Hempstead community during the coronavirus’s second wave.

The money will help continue the response to an increase in need for emergency food assistance brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and continued job losses in the region.

The Nourish NY Initiative, aimed at ensuring that no New Yorker goes hungry, purchases goods from New York State farmers and producers, protecting the stability of the agricultural economy and provides New York residents with access to local foods.

The initiative is part of the largest public investment in offshore wind workforce development by any state in the U.S., according to a joint statement from NYSERDA and SUNY.

The online event, emceed by WPIX-11 TV reporter Kirstin Cole, attracted more than 190 registered guests, who were also treated to a special musical performance by jazz pianist Pete Malinverni and his trio.

The new municipal lot, located on Pulaski Road just south of the stores on Main Street, contains 23 spaces, an electric vehicle charging station with two spaces for EV vehicles, and cost-efficient LED lighting.

The money will go towards supporting and expanding in-person and virtual classes and workshops, teacher training programs, and performances.
